Dr. Larycia Hawkins will present "The Soft Bigotry of Interreligious Space...and Beyond" for the 2021 Rabbi Sidney H. and Jane Brooks Lecture.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Larycia Hawkins is Assistant Professor, jointly appointed in the departments of Politics and Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. Her publications include Prophetic and Priestly: The Politics of a Black Catholic Parish and Jesus and Justice: The Moral Framing of the Black Agenda. Previously, she founded and directed the Peace and Conflict Studies Center at Wheaton College, where she was the first Black woman to receive tenure in the school’s history. In 2015, Dr. Hawkins and Wheaton parted ways after she wore a hijab during Lent in embodied solidarity with Muslim women and posted online that Muslims and Christians worship “the same God.” She was the subject of the 2018 documentary film Same God, which chronicled that journey. Dr. Hawkins is a faculty fellow at the Miller Center, the Religion Lab, and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture.
